2017 Alaska Eagle Eye Summer Institute for Young
The days take the rhythm of the liturgical observances of the Community of St. John. We have morning, midday and evening prayer. We also have daily mass. We will begin by hiking the Crow Pass Trail, part of the historic Iditarod trail. This is a well-known trail in Alaska, and you can find much good information about the hike on the internet. In short, the trail runs from outside Girdwood, AK up and over Crow Pass, then down into a valley, across Eagle River to the Eagle River Nature Center where the trail ends. The trail is about 24 miles long. We'll brave the challenges of crossing the glacial water of Eagle River and discover God in the beauty of Alaskan Wilderness.
Participants should be able to carry a backpack filled with personal and group gear and weighing about 40 pounds for the duration of the hike. At different points in the hike the weather conditions can range from 80 degrees and sunny to 30 degrees and sleet. There is no cell phone service on this hike. The camp sites have no facilities. You must be in shape and fit enough to walk steeply uphill continuously for 3 miles carrying a 40 pound backpack. A good attitude is required.
When we return to town, we will be staying at Holy Spirit Center, a Catholic retreat center on the hillside overlooking Anchorage. We will have daily mass and our thrice daily liturgical prayer there. We arrive Wednesday afternoon, and the in-town portion of the retreat continues until Sunday morning with participants catching flights home in the afternoon. Religious from the Community of St. John will be leading classes on theology, philosophy, and lectio divina- praying with The Word of God. The days are dynamic and thought-provoking. This is your chance to discern your place as a young adult in the church as well as to search for truth and why it is important. Participants can expect to share a bedroom with another person and to use shared bathrooms. Meals will be provided.
